The BOS Starter Kit

A Complete Business OS — On Your Machine, in a Weekend

Not a SaaS. Not a subscription. A template folder you download, point Claude at, and own forever. Everything Nick built for his own businesses, stripped of his personal data, ready to install on yours.

How it works

How the AI Installer Works

You download the kit (a folder of text files)

No app to install, no wizard to run. Just a zip file — a structured folder full of plain-text files that contain your entire Business OS, ready to configure.

You open Claude Code and drag the folder in

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding assistant — it runs on your Mac and talks to your files directly. Drag the kit folder in and it's immediately in context.

You say "read SETUP.md and install the Business OS" — Claude does the rest

Claude reads the instruction plan, walks through every installation step, and pauses only when it needs something only you can provide: an API key, a password, a decision about your business.

SETUP.md is an AI instruction plan — a detailed set of instructions written for Claude Code, not for humans. Claude reads it and walks through every installation step: checking prerequisites, pulling Docker containers, configuring services, and setting up background jobs. It pauses only when it needs something only you can provide — an API key, a password, a decision.

The human manual (HUMANS.md) is for you. It tells you what accounts to create, where to find your API keys, what the whole system costs, and what to expect in the first week. You read HUMANS.md; Claude reads SETUP.md.

What's in the folder

What's in the Folder

SETUP.md

The AI instruction plan. Claude reads this and installs the entire stack. You don't need to understand it — just point Claude at it.

HUMANS.md

Your manual. Accounts to create, API keys to collect, costs to expect, and what happens after install. Start here.

CLAUDE.md / SOUL.md

The "brain" contract files. They tell Claude Code who you are and what your business does. 30 minutes to customize, pays off forever.

context/

Your profile and communication preferences. The more you fill these in, the better Claude understands your business.

businesses/my-business/

Template for your first business — brand voice, operations overview, and agent rules. Rename and fill in.

skills/

Three pre-built skills ready to invoke: daily brief, CFO dashboard, and weekly advisor.

docker-compose.yml

The full self-hosted stack — CRM, automation engine, AI memory, team chat — in one file. docker compose up and it's running.

launchd/

macOS background service definitions. The daily brief, health checks, and the MCP server that lets Claude call your tools.

scripts/

The bootstrap installer and a Python requirements file. Claude runs these automatically as part of the install.

Under the hood

What Gets Installed — and What Each Part Does

Every service is open-source and self-hosted. You pay for the infrastructure, not a middleman's margin.

Service What it is What it does in your BOS
n8n Open-source workflow automation Connects to Gmail, Calendar, Drive — runs on your machine, not in someone else's cloud
Qdrant AI vector database Stores Claude's memory of your emails, documents, and decisions so nothing gets forgotten
Twenty Open-source CRM Your customer database — leads, contacts, pipeline — with no per-seat fees
Mattermost Open-source team chat Where Claude sends your daily briefings, alerts, and financial summaries
Beancount Plain-text accounting Your self-hosted books — reconciled daily via Plaid, auditable forever in plain text
Fava Web UI for Beancount The financial dashboard you look at — P&L, cash, balances, all live
DocuSeal Open-source e-signatures Contracts and waivers — no DocuSign fees, documents stored on your server

Is this right for you?

This Kit Is Right for You If...

Good fit

  • You own a Mac (M-series or Intel, macOS 13+)
  • You have an existing business — this is for operators, not people starting from scratch
  • You're comfortable with Terminal and following step-by-step instructions
  • You want to own your data and avoid software subscriptions with per-seat fees
  • You're willing to invest 2–4 hours of setup time on the front end
  • You have $130–200/mo for the ongoing AI APIs and infrastructure

Not a fit

  • Windows-only computer — the background services are macOS-specific
  • You want someone else to do everything — this is a foundation you customize, not a finished product
  • You're starting a business from zero — get revenue first, then systematize
  • You're uncomfortable with any software setup at all — the full-service build is a better fit

Still not sure? Book a free 30-min consult — we'll tell you honestly whether this is the right move.
